Clarissa was an exceptionally refined and genteel woman in all respects save the onset of supper, when her manner would become quite wanton and distinctly earthy.
Such was the ferocity of her attacks on the nightly feast, which bordered on the lascivious, that her family banished her to the servants kitchen where all would flee, save for Roland the chauffeur who watched her performances with keen interest, attending to her dress afterwards with a damp and furtive sponge.
