House Midgets, more colloquially known as "Domestic Dwarfs" were a "must have" in upper-class Victorian society.
Their duties included such things as spying on the servants, teaching the children about "the birds and the bees", delousing the pets and providing comic relief during those long, embarrassing pauses in polite conversation.
