Hans Mesmer, only child of famed
hypnotist Franz Mesmer did not inherit the gift of
showmanship.
On his first and only public appearance he immediately
performed the technique on himself and the audience waited,
in rapt attention for a full twenty minutes - during which
absolutely nothing happened - before a riot broke out and
the ill-fated offspring was tarred and feathered.
