For a brief period during the 1860's it was all the rage to Not Wash One's Hair. All sorts of strange contraptions were invented to capitalize on the craze, such as the Mal-Odorateur which, as you can see even recycled one's own dirty shower-water.
Historians attribute this fad to the French.
