1836, and the scourge of slavery is rife across America.
Always one to draw attention to himself, Frederick Douglass' first bid for freedom was rather ostentatious.
(Not surprisingly, he was caught, but successfully escaped two years later by the somewhat more mundane method of simply catching the train from Baltimore to New York.)
