The newly industrialized nations of the 19th Century
experimented with all manner of alternatives to steam power,
some rather less humane than others.
For instance, the Italian navy built a fearsome warship, "Il
Criceto", with eight massive floating wheels, which were
powered on the insides by vast numbers of hamsters.
