A most curious phenomenon during the Victorian era was the
rise of "Pain Parties".
Historians trace the origins to a folk custom of old
Bohemia, which inexplicably became a fashionable fad amongst
persons of leisure throughout Europe.
Apparently, otherwise normally healthy people would gather
together and celebrate, of all things, pain.
Injuries would frequently occur, and Italian leathersmiths
would profit from tailoring expensive support wear.
Fortunately for civilization and polite society, the
peculiar fad died out in 1856.
